SNOW Svalbard Integrated Arctic Earth Observing System (Snow_SIOS)

This project is the Snow component of the larger SIOS project, funded by NFR. It consist on installing new instrument to monitor snow in Svalbard, specifically in Ny-Ålesund and its region, and Austfonna.

Thank you for adding your research project to the growing pool of knowledge about the research going on in Svalbard and its surrounding waters!

As we would like you to know a bit about what is going on in Svalbard in your discipline and fieldwork surroundings, we have selected some projects that should be interesting for you to have a look at. There are {{related}} projects registered in RiS that match with your keywords, and below you will find links to the 3 that have the most relevant match.

As we all work to reduce our environmental footprint, we want to give you an easy way to find projects that have fieldwork close to you, so you can contact the project owner and coordinate your logistics whenever possible. This could also help you save some expensive costs ;) There are {{close}} projects registered in RiS that have registered their fieldwork sites within 10 km from you, and below you will find links to the 3 closest fieldwork locations.

Summary

SIOS is a regional observing system for long-term measurements in and around Svalbard addressing Earth System Science questions. SIOS integrates the existing distributed observational infrastructure and generates added value for all partners beyond what their individual capacities can provide. SIOS brings observations together into a coherent and integrated observational programme that will be sustained over a long period. Within SIOS, researchers can cooperate to access instruments, acquire data and address questions that would not be practical or cost effective for a single institution or nation alone. By bringing many types of observations together and asking questions about how these are influenced by each other SIOS generates new insights about the Svalbard region’s role in the Earth system. Thus, SIOS offers unique opportunities for research and the long-term acquisition of fundamental knowledge about global environmental change. SIOS focuses on processes and their interactions between the different spheres, i.e. biosphere, geosphere, atmosphere, cryosphere and hydrosphere. The core observational programme of SIOS provides the research community with systematic observations that are sustained over time, yet dynamic enough to be adapted as new methods and questions from society appear.
