Additional Radiosondes in the Frame of the Arctic Research Collaboration for Observing System Experiment (ARCROSE) (ARCROSE Radiosondes)

During the campaign period of the Arctic Research Collaboration for Observing System Experiment (ARCROSE), the frequency of radiosonde launches at the AWIPEV research base in Ny-Alesund is increased to 4 launches per day, providing additional upper-air information on p, T, RH and wind to contribute to the improvement of weather forecast systems.

Summary

During the campaign period of the Arctic Research Collaboration for Observing System Experiment (ARCROSE), the frequency of radiosonde launches at the AWIPEV research base in Ny-Alesund is increased to 4 launches per day. From these balloon-borne measurements, vertical profiles of pressure, temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and direction from ground to about 30 km are obtained. The data are transmitted in near-real time to the GTS (Global Telecommunication System) to be implemented in numerical weather and climate models by data assimilation schemes. The 6-hourly temporal resolution the provided upper-air information will contribute to the improvement of polar prediction systems and coupled climate models.
