Kongsfjorden and Rijpfjorden observatory programme - Kongsfjorden marine observatory (KROP)

The Kongsfjorden and Rijpfjorden Observatory Programme (KROP) maintains oceanographic observatories in the aforementioned fjords since 2002 and 2006, respectively. Instrumentation includes CTDs, ADCPs, sediment traps as well as other instruments for shorter periods. All data is publicly available upon request.

The KROP programme is based on two ongoing observatories in Kongsfjorden (KF) and Rijpfjorden (RF). The former was established by the Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS) in 2002, whereas the latter was initiated in 2006 as part of the Norwegian IPY project "CLEOPATRA" (RIS-6051 Today, the KF observatory is implemented as part of the SIOS InfraNOR programme NFR 269927 (, and will be operated by UiT The Arctic University of Norway until 2026 in collaboration with SAMS. The RF observatory is currently a joint initiative funded internally by UiT and SAMS. The observatories provide a wide range of physical and biogeochemical data. The standard instrumention consists of: SeaBird CTDs (with additional Fluorescence and PAR sensors) and temperature loggers throughout the entire water column, a MacLane sediment trap at 100 m and upward and downward looking ADCPs at 90 m and 110 m. In addition a range of other instruments have been deployed during the years. These include a MacLane RAS (autonomous water sampler), an AURAL acoustic listening buoy, Nitrate and pH sensors, various settlement plates and other items for biological experiments.
