Summary

After several testing and cooperation with other projects, we are able to collect data using a Drone. The photography footage taken by the drone will be “feeded to a algorithm” this algorithm is able to identify litter on the photos on it’s ow when we train it enough. This “training” is happening already and makes great progress. Besides of the photos we are taking samples and collect more photography data to identify the types of litter and mark “hot spot areas”. The algorithm can be found at: https://www.zooniverse.org/projects/theplastictide/the-plastic-tide Besides the algorithm the Alfred Wegener Institut is operating LITTERBASE. LITTERBASE, compiles information from 1,549 scientific publications on marine litter in a comprehensive data base. This forms the basis of continuously updated maps and figures for policy makers, authorities, scientists, media and the general public on the global amount, distribution and composition of marine litter and its impacts on aquatic life.
