We want to determine water quality by studying specific species groups in Artic lakes in the vicinity of Ny-Ålesund. These lakes are impacted by geese to various intensities. Cladocera and Desmidiaceae are two plankton groups in freshwater systems that are considered key ecological indicators: Cladocera for its position in the food web. Previous studies have shown an increase in Daphnia in relation to goose dropping eutrofication (Van der Geest et al. 2007). Desmidiaceae are key ecological indicators because of their sensitivity to water quality. The species composition of Cladocera and Desmidiaceae will be compared between lakes and can provide a basis for future monitoring of local changes when environmental parameters change due to goose grazing or climate change.
