During the field work we will deploy the AUV REMUS operated by NTNU AUR-Lab for under ice operations. Thiis will be the first under ice operation for this vehicle. Operating the vehicle under ice enables us to perform a long range of measurements for biologists while being and interesting engineering challenge.

During the project the AUV will be deployed from land fixed ice for under ice operation. Under ice operation represents an engineering challenge as the vehicle cannot surface for to acquire GPS fixes and or communicate with the operators. Successful operation does also require the vehicle to return to the exact location of the hole in the ice. Without ability for GPS fixes, the underwater and under ice navigation represents an engineering challenges that will be approached with acoustic navigation instruments. Under ice acoustics is another challenge as the ice cover will influence the sound refraction properties. However - this project have tools to assess this challenges and to complete a successful under ice operation. For land fixed ice, this location is stationary making the challenge easier. In the polar ice the point of recovery will be drifting. Operation in fixed ice is hence a proper first step for under ice operations. Operating AUV under ice will provide important information about the water masses under the ice cover - these data will be shared with marine bioolgists, chemists and oceanographers.
