The aim of this project is to measure, understand and predict phytoplankton responses to multiple stressors, i.e. Ocean Acidification and changes in light availability as resulting from ice-melt and enhanced stratification, by focusing on the Arctic Ocean as one of the most sensitive areas on Earth.

Summary

In order to understand how OA and enhanced irradiances (resulting from sea-ice retreat and increased mixed layer stratification) will alter the species composition, productivity and ecophysiology of Arctic phytoplankton, I propose to conduct incubation experiments with natural pre- and post-bloom plankton assemblages from Kongsfjorden, exposing these to different pCO2 scenarios and irradiance levels. Specifically, I want to test the hypothesis that beneficial effect of Ocean Acidification are most pronounced under low light intensities, while negative consequences of Ocean Acidification manifest under high light.
