Long-term snow cover and sea ice monitoring in Hornsund region

Snow cover and sea ice monitoring program developed in Horsund is direct descendant of SSF SSG-funded SMACS project (RiS 6823). As results of SMACS project proved to be valuable to scientific community gathered round PPS in Hornsund, we decided to extend area of monitoring of snow cover and use same set up to monitor sea ice cover in Isbjornhamna.

Summary

Snow cover and sea ice monitoring program developed in Horsund is direct descendant of SSF SSG-funded "Snow monitoring using automatic camera systems at Svalbard key sites" project. As results of SMACS project proved to be valuable to scientific community gathered round Polish Polar Station in Hornsund, we decided to extend area of monitoring of snow cover and use same camera set up to monitor sea ice conditions in Isbjornhamna bay. The main objectives are to monitor extent of snow cover and sea ice in vicinity of PPS Hornsund (Fuglebergsletta and Isbjornhamna). Project outputs will be available to scientific community. We find it useful to wide range of disciplines including: climatology, plant and animal ecology, geomorphology, permafrost studies and oceanography. Cameras will be installed on mountain tops and moraines overlooking area of Fuglebergsletta and Isbjornhamna bay. To diminish footprint on tundra environment, cameras will be installed in April and uninstalled in October each season. Information gathered with cameras will by supplemented by measurements of snow depth and snow water equivalent at 9 snow stakes located in Fuglebekken catchment. Snow depth and swe measurements will be carried out in weekly routine by staff of PPS Hornsund.
