Polarization of the auroral red line (Polarlis2)

In September 2014, we installed a polarimeter at the Observatory in Ny Alesund. It points magnetic west. In Feb. 2015, we aim at going to Ny Alesund to perform experiments in other magnetic directions during the last useable nights of the year (solar angle > 108°). We will then unmount SPP to bring it back to Mainland for a full check.

Summary

We performed the first observation of the polarization of the thermospheric red line in Longyearbyen after a preparation of 5 years, thanks to an instrument assembled in Oslo by our colleagues at the University of Oslo and the University UNIS at Svalbard. However, the site of Longyearbyen and Ny Alesund are optically polluted. Because of the magnetic configuration and ionospheric conditions, Svalbard présents the best characteristics for these observations. Thanks to an IPEV funding in 2010, we could install SPP at the Polish base (Hornsund) for wintering in a totally dark site. From this campaign, an article was published in 2013. SPP worked several weeks before breaking down. In 2011, we made a new request to the IPEV to continue this program, but we had to suspend our application (and were therefore not funded) because the instrument could not be repatriated and repaired in time. Since then, we have repaired the instrument, and built a new more powerful instrument called Premier Cru. This application follows the outline of the abandoned application in 2011,for a full winter of SPP at Hornsund, while Premier Cru will perform sporadic observations in parallel from the most accessible sites in Lapland and in Longyearbyen. In February 2015, we aim at going to Ny Alesund to perform experiments in other magnetic directions (azimuth and elevations) during the last useable nights of the year (solar angle > 108°). We will then unmount SPP to bring it back to Mainland for a full check.
