Summary

This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of ground validation at the polar sites operated by National Institute of Polar Research (NIPR), i.e. Syowa Station(69.0S, 39.6E) in the Antarctic and Ny-Alesund Station (78.9N, 11.9E) in the Arctic. To accomplish the objectives of this study, measurement data from ground-based micro-pulse lidars, sky-radiometers, and all-sky camera systems at those polar sites are used for validation and analysed for obtaining optical parameters of aerosols and clouds. The micro-pulse lidar measurement provides vertical profiles of the aerosol and cloud extinction coefficients and the depolarization ratio, and also the cloud bottom height at least. The sky-radiometer measurement provides the aerosol optical thickness and Angstrom exponent. The all-sky camera measurement provides the cloud type and amount in the whole sky. It is prospected that ground-truth measurements at the Antarctic Syowa Station and the Arctic Ny-Alesund Station can contribute to validation of the EarthCARE products especially in the polar regions.
